Canadian Flag

February 15th is National Flag Day across the country. Canadians will be celebrating with events and a show of pride for our national symbol.  One thing to keep in mind when a flag becomes worn and ragged is to follow the proper disposal protocols.  Liesa Peters, of Oliver's Funeral Home in Grande Prairie, says that they have been providing flag burning services for the community, however with the current nylon fabrics being used this is no longer a preferred method of disposal.  Oliver's has now connected with the City of Grande Prairie and will be hosting a Flag Burial Ceremony on February 15 at 10:30am.    The public will depart from Oliver's and then proceed to the City of Grande Prairie Cemetery on 84th Avenue for a flag burial ceremony with veterans on-site.  Oliver's Funeral Home will be hosting some veterans and the public after the cemetery ceremony.  Get more information at OliversFuneralHome.com.

____

On February 15, 1965 our national flag was raised for the first time on Parliament Hill. Then, in 1996, February 15th was declared National Flag of Canada Day. Every year since, we celebrate our beautiful flag.  This year, the National Flag of Canada is celebrating its 53rd anniversary during the 2018 Winter Olympics. Canadians are invited to celebrate this important symbol of our identity by organizing their own events, showing their pride on social media and cheering on Canadian Olympic and Paralympic athletes. Be a part of the "Take a selfie with the flag" challenge by posting a picture or video of you with the flag and inspire others to do the same! #Canadianflag To learn more about National Flag of Canada Day, visit the Did you know and Do’s and don’ts when displaying the flag sections.  https://www.canada.ca/en/canadian-heritage/campaigns/national-flag-canada-day/about.html
