A Florida firefighter has gained a new family member, and he says God played a huge role in it.

In January, the firefighter was working an overnight shift at his fire hall in Ocala, Florida, when an alarm connected to the Safe Haven Baby Box in the station went off.

He thought it was a false alarm and was surprised when he opened it up and found a newborn baby wrapped in a pink blanket.

The Safe Haven Baby Box is a place where someone can surrender a child safely and anonymously.

“She had a little bottle with her, and she was just chilling,” the firefighter told TODAY.com. “I picked her up and held her. We locked eyes, and that was it. I’ve loved her ever since that moment.”

For years the firefighter and his wife had struggled to have a baby. They had even taken all the classes necessary and were registered to adopt. This experience got him thinking.

He decided to go with the newborn to the hospital, where he could inquire about adopting her.

"I didn't call my wife right away because I didn't want to wake her up, but I knew she'd be on board," he says of his plan to TODAY.com.

Two days later, the little girl, who they named Zoey, was home with the firefighter and his wife. They adopted her in April.

"The way I found her... This was God helping us out," he told TODAY.com

The firefighter hopes that by sharing Zoey's story, it will give her biological mother some closure.
