A military vehicle caught fire near a local national park.

Just after noon on Thursday (Oct.14), the Strathcona County Emergency Services were called to a vehicle fire eastbound on Highway 16 near Range Road 210, close to Elk Island National Park.

There was an initial report about whether or not it was an army tank, however, it turned out to be a light armoured vehicle.

Strathcona County Emergency Services platoon chief Barry Bouwsema explained that the fire was small and contained to a compartment inside the vehicle.

“Military personnel had already removed all ordnance from the vehicle to our arrival. They had suppressed most of the fire with onboard fire extinguishers,” he said.

One squad, including a tanker truck, a platoon chief and a safety officer, attended the scene and helped extinguish the remaining fire in the compartment.

The fire is currently being investigated.
