"Don't do it. Don't even think about it. It's a bad idea."

That's the message from the Carstairs Fire Chief in regards to the latest social media challenge.

Over the years, many social media challenges have gone viral.

Some have been for good causes, like the popular "ALS Ice Bucket Challenge" a number of years ago.

Some have been for silly fun, like "planking", where people would rigidly lay their bodies in random places, or the "Matilda challenge" where users would re-create the scene from the popular film where the title character makes things in the room move to the tune of Thurston Harris' 'Little Bitty Pretty One.'

Others have been downright dangerous, like the "Tide Pod Challenge" where people would purposely bite into the detergent-filled laundry pods.

Now fire officials are warning against another risky dare making the rounds on the social media platform TikTok.

In the challenge, people are unplugging a charger slightly from an outlet and dropping a penny in the gap to create a spark.

A mother from Carstairs came forward earlier this week with a warning for other parents after her son tried the challenge. The spark left a black mark on the outlet and phone charger.

Carstairs Fire Chief Jordan Schaffer says there are serious risks to this challenge.

"By far the biggest danger is if the breaker does not trip, you could easily, first of all, hurt the child or the person doing it. And second of all, you could actually start a fire," warns Schaffer. "And the fire may not be instantaneous, it could sit in the walls for numerous hours before it actually starts a fire."

Schaffer says that poses a great danger to anyone in the home, especially if they go to bed not aware of what might be igniting within their walls.

"The last thing we want is to have fires and anybody to get hurt," Schaffer says.
